🏳️‍🌈 Why LGBTQ2S+ Torontonians Still Face Barriers in Housing — And How I’m Here to Help

Toronto is a vibrant, diverse, and welcoming city—but when it comes to housing, not everyone experiences it equally. For many members of the LGBTQ2S+ community—especially transgender, non-binary, and racialized individuals—accessing safe, affordable, and secure housing remains a daily challenge.

As a realtor and advocate for housing equity, I want to shine a light on the ongoing discrimination in our rental and homeownership markets, and more importantly, share how I can help LGBTQ2S+ clients find a home where they feel safe, respected, and proud.

The Hidden Crisis: Discrimination in Renting and Owning

While Toronto is celebrated for its progressive values, the reality on the ground tells a different story:

  • 43% of gender-diverse renters report discrimination from landlords or property managers.

  • LGBTQ2S+ individuals are overrepresented in the shelter system—making up about 12% of Toronto’s homeless population, despite representing a much smaller percentage of the general population.

  • Transgender people often face added layers of bias when applying for rentals or trying to secure a mortgage—especially if their legal documents don’t match their lived identity.

And when it comes to owning a home, the gap becomes even wider. Lower average incomes, systemic barriers in lending, and a lack of tailored financial guidance mean that LGBTQ2S+ households fall behind other demographics in homeownership rates.

What the Data Shows

  • Income inequality continues to impact 2SLGBTQ+ people, making it harder to save for a down payment or qualify for a mortgage.

  • Shelter safety is a real concern. Many trans individuals avoid shelters altogether due to fear of discrimination or violence.

  • A 2022 study by Egale Canada found that many queer renters don’t report discrimination because they fear retaliation or being passed over for other housing.

These are not just statistics—they reflect real experiences of exclusion and vulnerability.

How I’m Making a Difference

As a realtor and financial coach, I believe that everyone deserves fair and equal access to housing—whether you’re looking for your first rental or working toward homeownership.

Here’s how I support my LGBTQ2S+ clients:

Safe & affirming rental support – I help screen listings, communicate with landlords, and advocate for you so you’re not doing it alone.

Homeownership readiness coaching – Whether it’s building your credit, understanding your rights, or exploring down payment programs, I’ll guide you every step of the way.

LGBTQ2S+ friendly connections – I work with inclusive lenders, legal professionals, and inspectors who treat you with respect and dignity.

Confidential, non-judgmental service – You deserve to work with someone who understands your journey and listens without bias.

Know Your Rights

In Ontario, you are legally protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression—whether you're renting or buying.

Still, knowing your rights isn’t enough. You need someone in your corner who will stand up for them.

Let’s Change the Narrative

Toronto is your city, too. And finding a home should be about comfort, safety, and belonging—not fear or rejection.

If you’re part of the LGBTQ2S+ community and are feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure where to start when it comes to housing, I’m here for you.

Let’s talk about your goals and build a plan that puts you on the path toward secure housing and financial independence.

🏡 Because everyone deserves a place to call home—without exception.
